Isn’t that what you want? Results?
In one form or another, we all have creative intentions for which we want results.
When you ask yourself …what do I want with my creativity (art, innovation, ideas, etc..)? What is YOUR answer?
Those are the results you want.
I know when I show up at my studio, I am more focused and effective when I know what I want to do. I like the feeling of productivity and success with my artwork. It gives me jazzed energy, empowers my confidence, and stimulates my creativity for the next go ’round. Sometimes I want to get a specific task done and I’m focused on completing a canvas or project. Other times, I arrive with the mindset to enjoy and revel in the unfolding process of my freeing creativity without the expectation of completing something. Either way, I arrive at my studio with the intention to produce the results I want.
Whether you are process oriented or product oriented, it is powerful to show up with for creativity and accomplish…something that is meaningful to you.
Here’s 3 sure fire tips to help you succeed in getting YOUR creative results.
1. Get clear on your expectations.
What is your goal when you show up to create today?
Do you want to finish the chapter you’ve been writing or do you just want to freely write for 25 minutes without any purpose in mind? Get crystal clear if your creative mindset is for process or product.
Think about what is it you want to do today. It’s ok to not know. That in itself is a clear goal to just be open (see next tip) to what evolves (and this is leaning more towards a process mindset).
Focus on what you expect to do and provide yourself an environment in which you can succeed. Do you need music or does that hinder you? Do you need to work first off in the morning or once the kids go to bed? What type of environment will help you get the results you need?
2. Keep an open mind.
Sometimes things just don’t go the way we plan. That chapter doesn’t get finished or you feel stuck on a single word. Maybe you just can’t get that paint to spread the way you intend or the clay just won’t stay centered. So go with the flow, be flexible, or let it evolve…whatever you call it, allow your creative flow to go with what you are experiencing.
Just stop and be open to letting your creative juices just flow. Maybe you are TOO focused on completing the product that your creativity feels stifled.
Be flexible and open to change direction if your creativity is telling you to take a different direction.
Remember sometimes the biggest innovations and creative breakthroughs occur just after our biggest flop, failure, or frustration. So even if you expected to finish the chapter today, recognize that below the surface a brighter source of inspiration may be delivered to you.
3. Make a commitment.
How badly do you really want results? Be honest. If you really are committed to making the changes and choices that will move your creativity forward, you need to put a plan together and take action. Set a creativity schedule for yourself. Honor it like you would an appointment with a friend or professional. Determine how much time you REALLY need to get the results you want and chunk it down. How many days will it take? Hours? Commit to yourself that you WILL take the necessary steps to achieve the result you want. After you are clear on what results you want (see 1st tip) you can let it evolve (tip 2) while you are focused on your end result.
